And Sri Lanka tops the list – Gihan Chandrawansa

Dear CoTF Friends and Colleagues

I thought you might be interested in this New York Times article on places to visit in 2010.

As you will see Sri Lanka comes top of the list. There is no doubt we have had our share of problems over the last few years, but I believe Sri Lanka still remains one of the most beautiful places in the world - AND the New York Times seems to agree. (It's just great to be right - sometimes!)

D.J.G Hennessy the famous British author who lived in Sri Lanka and wrote the book Green Aisles in the year 1949, probably sums it up best when he writes;

"To me the beauty of Ceylon lies not so much in its blue seas and golden beaches, its jungles and its mountain peaks, as in its ancient atmosphere. There is no nation, from Egypt of the Pharaohs to modern Britain, in whose literature this island has not at some time been mentioned by one or other of its many names -- Lanka, Serendib, Taprobane, Cellao, Zellan, to recall a few. History lies buried in its sands, and ghosts of romance lurk among its bastioned rocks, for Lanka is very, very old." - D. J. G. Hennessy, GREEN AISLES, 1949
