With Armed Forces Day is on June 26th in Britain and it is being promoted in some unusual ways

HM Naval Base Clyde’s Fleet Photographic Unit (North), have been doing their bit to promote the national event, taking to the waves to fly the flag!

Helensburgh sailor, Petty Officer (Photographer) Carl “Donny” Osmond (30), fastened-on his water skis on Tuesday, May 11, at Helensburgh pier to have his picture taken trailing the Armed Forces Day Flag.

“With Armed Forces Day coming soon the Fleet Photographic Branch wanted us to do something to promote the event,” said Donny.  “We were looking for something a bit out of the ordinary and hit on the idea of taking to the water at Helensburgh for a photograph or two.”

Donny spends much of his free time on the water – taking part in diving, surfing, and, of course, waterskiing.  LA Phot Stuart Hill towed Donny on his jet bike while colleague, LA Phot Brian “Dougie” Douglas took the images from a boat supplied by HMS Neptune Sailing Centre.

“It was a bit of a challenge,” continued Donny.  “I was in number one uniform with a wetsuit underneath, but the uniform was soaking and the extra weight made it hard to stay upright.  We were on the water for around two-hours, but it was a great feeling being towed at 35mph in front of Helensburgh pier.”

Armed Forces Day will be held on Saturday, June 26, and will give members of the public the chance to show their support and appreciation for those who serve and have served in HM Armed Forces.
